Understanding How Air and Noise Pollution Affect Valley Families
biomSPHERE was a study funded by CARB and OEHHA and a collaboration with UC Merced and UC Berkeley, aiming to assess total exposures to air pollutants and noise in Fresno and Stockton communities. The project addressed knowledge gaps in environmental exposure , examined determinants of exposure and evaluated potential human health risks in relation to exposures . A total of 64 households were enrolled for which research staff collected both indoor and outdoor air pollution data, along with indoor noise, occupant health data and other household information. Data collection for SPHERE was completed in the winter of 2023 and study results were returned to participants in the fall of 2024 and summer of 2025. A biomonitoring component was added to this study (BiomSPHERE) that included collection of urine samples from children and adults in each home. Samples were analyzed for metabolites of air pollutants and markers of oxidative stress. Data collection for SPHERE was completed in the winter of 20232024 and study results were returned to participants in the fall of 2024 and summer of 2025. CCAC is partnering with UC Merced and OEHHA to assess the content, format and impact (benefit) of the returned results on study participants (see EARS project).
