Impacts of Residential Decarbonization on Indoor Air Quality
The HAPCEP study was a collaboration with Berkeley Air Monitoring Group, funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), to assess the impacts of replacing gas (propane) appliances (e.g. stoves, furnaces, water heaters) with electric appliances on indoor air quality. This study included 138 homes in the communities of Allensworth, Alpaugh, Ducor and West Goshen where the California Public Utility Commission conducted a pilot project to electrify heating and cooking appliances in SJV communities that were not connected to natural gas infrastructure and were currently reliant on propane or other fuels for heating and cooking.
Study Findings
This study demonstrated a significant (70%) reduction in NO2 in homes that replaced gas appliances with electric compared to those that continued using propane.
